Shohei Ohtani quickly won over Los Angeles Dodgers organization and fanbase in his first season with the team, and the sky-high level of popularity is perhaps matched only by Decoy.
The love for Ohtani’s dog began early this year and snowballed into a ceremonial first pitch, their own bobblehead and enjoying the World Series parade together. And it seems that the love for Decoy, also known as Decopin, is not limited to fans, but a couple important members of the Dodgers organization as well.
During an appearance on the “On Base” podcast, manager Dave Roberts was receptive to the idea of Decoy becoming the Dodgers’ mascot:
“I’m on base with Decoy being our mascot. … For Decoy to learn how to deliver a first pitch, in like two weeks, that’s unprecedented. So if he can do that, Decoy can lead us to another championship.”
Roberts’ sentiment was echoed by Betts as well:
“I’m with it. I think we just get a costume of him made and someone should play Decoy all the time. Travel with us and whatnot. Like the Phanatic, we need Decoy.”
The Dodgers have never had an official mascot in their history and are one of the few MLB teams without one. The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels are others in MLB without a mascot. Though, the Angels adopted the Rally Monkey during their run to the 2022 World Series titles.
In the past 24 seasons there has not been a repeat champion in MLB, but a new mascot here and a Roki Sasaki there might help increase their chances in 2025.
Shohei Ohtani’s dog: Decoy facts
Decoy is a Dutch Kooikerhondje, which are considered lively, agile, self-confident, good-natured and alert. The American Kennel Club also notes the Nederlandse Kooikerhondje breed is faithful, easy-going and friendly.
Decoy became popular among baseball fans when he was seen with Ohtani for the announcement of the 2023 American League MVP Award on MLB Network last year.
Ohtani honored Decoy by including him on his customized cleats for MLB Players Weekend and continuing to wear the pair after that point.
