World Series Preview: Yankees & Dodgers Renew Rivalry With Game 1

A mere 43 years after last playing, the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers revive the most-common World Series and postseason matchup in MLB history.

The 2024 World Series represents the 12th time the Yankees and Dodgers have met in the Fall Classic. The next most-frequent postseason matchups are the Yankees and Cleveland Guardians (seven), and New York and San Francisco Giants (seven).

The Yankees have won eight of the previous 11 meetings with the Dodgers in the World Series. However, it was the Dodgers who were victorious when the teams last played in 1981.

For the Dodgers, it’s their fourth trip to the World Series in the past eight years. They last were in the Fall Classic in 2020.

The Yankees are back in the World Series for the first time since 2009.

“It is worldwide. I think that’s what’s going to make this World Series so special, so unique,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the day before Game 1 at Dodger Stadium.

“You could easily argue that on a global scale the Yankees and the Dodgers are the most followed, the most supported, the most visible. So obviously with our two great organizations and the branding, it’s going to be very visible.”

Jack Flaherty starts for the Dodgers and has a self-given goal of setting the tone in Game 1.

Flaherty labored in his last postseason start, which may have been caused by being under the weather but also falling out of rhythm.

The Yankees counter with ace Gerrit Cole, a Southern California native like Flaherty. Cole is expected to carry a Yankees rotation that is believed to have an edge over the Dodgers.

Brusdar Graterol, Miguel Rojas and Alex Vesia were added onto the Dodgers’ roster for the World Series. However, the bullpen suffered a big loss with Evan Phillips not being included.
