2024 World Series: Nestor Cortes Added To Yankees Postseason Roster Against Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees renew one of baseball’s most historic rivalries when they meet in Game 1 of the 2024 World Series on Friday night at Dodger Stadium.

The teams are facing off in the Fall Classic for the 12th time in MLB postseason history, but first since 1981.

The Dodgers eliminated the New York Mets to win the National League pennant, and the Yankees advanced to the World Series after knocking off the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Championship Series.

The Yankees only made one change to their roster for the World Series, adding Nestor Cortes and dropping Jon Berti. The team is now carrying 13 pitchers and 13 position players.

Cortes hasn’t pitched since Sept. 18, when he suffered a flexor strain in his left elbow during a start against the Seattle Mariners. The 29-year-old admitted that his elbow still isn’t fully healed, but is willing to risk making his injury worse for a chance to pitch in the World Series.

Cortes, who made 30 of his 31 appearances during the regular season as a starter, will shift to a relief role. His return gives the Yankees three left-handed relief pitchers in their bullpen, along with Tim Hill and Tim Mayza.

New York’s roster features a pair of former Dodgers in Tommy Kahnle and Alex Verdugo. There is plenty of star power, with Gerrit Cole, Aaron Judge, Juan Soto and Giancarlo Stanton leading the way.
