2024 NLCS: Brent Honeywell Hoped He Saw A ‘Rally Snake’ At Dodger Stadium

The New York Mets rattled the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series with a 7-3 win that tied it up at 1-1 as the two clubs head to Citi Field.

But one of the bright spots of the day for the Dodgers was Brent Honeywell, who was added to the roster as a replacement for Alex Vesia after dealing with an injury of his own. In his first postseason appearance, Honeywell constricted the Mets, tossing three scoreless innings while giving up just one hit and helping preserve the Dodgers other arms.

But after walking off the mound in the fifth inning, Honeywell noticed something unusual: something slithering along the steps of Dodgers dugout.

“I’ve seen all kinds of stuff in the dugout before,” Honeywell said. “But when I walked off, I saw it was just a snake there. I don’t think Danny (Lehmann) saw it, it was right next to him. Like I said, I was hoping it was a rally snake, we pushed some across right after that.”

Other teams have adopted a rally animal in the past, which included the most-famed Los Angeles Angels’ rally monkey, and the San Diego Padres previously had the rally goose.

While Honeywell was hoping for a rally snake, he guessed that it was just a garden snake. However, the Dodgers did end up scoring their first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth, which came via a home run from Max Muncy.

They added two more in the sixth inning to make it a three-run game. Unfortunately for the Dodgers, their rally stopped there.

Still, it was a highly encouraging outing for Honeywell, who showed he can continue to be a significant piece of the pitching puzzle as they hope to continue playing deep into October.

Brent Honeywell has prior reptile experience

Surprisingly, it wasn’t Honeywell’s first time seeing a reptile in a dugout. While he was a top prospect in the Tampa Bay Rays system, prior to playing a game while in Charolette, Fla., he walked out to find another unexpected creature.

“In A-ball, there was an eight- or nine-foot alligator in the dugout under the bench,” Honeywell said. “It had rained a bunch. They just got him out of there. It crawled back in the water.

“But that’s what we need every now and again, to see some crazy stuff like this.”
