The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Russell Martin on the 10-day injured list with low back inflammation and recalled Rocky Gale from Triple-A Oklahoma City prior to Wednesday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Martin missed a few days of workouts during Spring Training due to back soreness. He is the second player the Dodgers have put on the IL in as many days, joining Hyun-Jin Ryu in being sidelined.
The veteran catcher last appeared in a game on Monday, going 1-for-3 in the series opener at Busch Stadium. Overall this season, Martin is 5-for-15 (.333) with one home run and two RBI in six games (five starts).
He returned to the Dodgers organization via trade with the Toronto Blue Jays last January. Martin was selected by L.A. in the 17th round of the 2002 Draft.
Gale was signed by the Dodgers in February 2018, and appeared in three games for the club at the end of the year after spending the season with Oklahoma City. Gale went 2-for-6 with three runs scored and a double in his time with OKC this year.
He previously was up in the Majors during parts of the 2015 and 2017 seasons, though only appeared in a combined 14 games with the San Diego Padres.
