The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Austin Barnes on the 10-day injured list with a fractured left big toe and recalled Hunter Feduccia from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Barnes started on Sunday but was removed from the game in the top of the fifth inning when Will Smith pinch-hit for him. The Dodgers ended up announcing he exited the game due to a left big toe contusion.
Barnes previously fractured his left big toe nearly one month ago as a result of being hit by a pitch during a game against the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Dodgers placed him on the IL and Barnes returned once he was eligible to be activated. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated at the time his availability moving forward would be determined by managing and playing through the lingering pain.
After Barnes exited the game on Sunday, Roberts indicated it would be a likely IL stint and that his concern for the backup catcher was high. With just roughly two weeks remaining in the regular season, it would not be surprising if Barnes misses the rest of it.
Hunter Feduccia back with Dodgers
Feduccia last joined the Dodgers when Barnes was placed on the IL and was sent back down when the backstop was activated. He now joins the Dodgers for his third stint this season, and the third MLB stint of his career.
Feduccia made his first MLB start his last time with the Dodgers and pickled up his first career hit during his only start on Aug. 25 against the Tampa Bay Rays. He called it a “dream come true” and had his family in attendance for the moment.
The 27-year-old has had a successful season in Triple-A, batting .284/.409/.428 with six home runs, 41 runs scored, 50 RbI and a 117 wRC+. At the Major League Level, he’s hit .333/.500/.333 in four plate appearances.
