The Miami Marlins claimed Michael Petersen off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers, who designated him for assignment on Sunday as one of two corresponding roster moves to selecting Nick Ramirez from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Ramirez has since been designated for assignment himself as the corresponding move to activating Yoshinobu Yamamoto off the 60-day injured list.

Petersen signed a Minor League contract with the Dodgers in January and he would make his MLB debut on June 18. The right-hander allowed one run in two innings of relief and earned a win against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

He also recorded his first strikeout, getting Elehuris Montero to whiff.

Petersen was originally selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 17th round of the 2015 MLB Draft. He had a long journey, but never doubted his ability to reach the Majors.

Petersen’s final appearance with the Dodgers came on Sept. 4, when he gave up four hits and three runs in one inning against the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium.

In three stints with the Dodgers, Petersen went 3-0 with a 6.43 ERA, 6.32 FIP and 1.57 WHIP over 14 innings pitched (11 appearances).

The 30-year-old fared much better with Oklahoma City, going 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and 10 saves in 33 innings. He recorded 44 strikeouts against eight walks and only allowed one home run.

The Marlins made room on their 40-man roster for Petersen by designating Brett de Geus for assignment, who was selected by the Dodgers in the 33rd round of the 2017 MLB Draft.

Michael Petersen pitched in 2023 World Baseball Classic

Petersen, a native of the United Kingdom, pitched for Great Britain in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In his only appearance against Team USA, he retired Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado and Trea Turner to work a scoreless inning.
