The Los Angeles Dodgers reinstated Tommy Edman from the 60-day injured list and Nick Ahmed was designated for assignment prior to Monday’s game against the Seattle Mariners.

There were multiple options available to the Dodgers in order to activate Edman, but in choosing to DFA Ahmed, they cleared space on their 40-man and active rosters in one fell swoop.

Ahmed joins Cavan Biggio, Amed Rosario and Brent Honeywell as players designated for assignment by the Dodgers during August.

Biggio was released from the organization and remains a free agent, Rosario was claimed by the Cincinnati Reds, and Honeywell is still going through waivers.

Ahmed had been with the Dodgers since signing a Major League contract on July 24 after getting designated for assignment by the San Francisco Giants and subsequently released upon clearing waivers.

The Giants had a changing of the guard at shortstop this season as they didn’t re-sign Brandon Crawford in order to provide opportunities to Marco Luciano and Casey Schmitt. San Francisco initially signed Ahmed to a Minor League contract as a backup option but he won the starting job out of Spring Training.

However, he largely struggled to consistently hit, and the Giants went with youth at the position.

The Dodgers signed Ahmed to shore up shortstop in the wake of Miguel Rojas going on the 10-day injured list with a right forearm strain.

Ahmed batted .229/.245/.292 with one home run and two RBI over 17 games (13 starts) with the Dodgers. His home run came against the Giants and helped the Dodgers earn a series win just three games into his time with the team.

“I’ve got a lot of great friends and teammates over there that I love. Those are good guys, but now I’m trying to beat them,” Ahmed said. “So it’s a lot of fun. It’s funny how the timing worked out and just excited to help us win a game today.”

Tommy Edman’s role with Dodgers

Although Edman is capable of playing multiple positions, manager Dave Roberts said the Dodgers anticipate him primarily spending time in center field.

Edman conceivably could be a backup option at shortstop as well, along with spelling Gavin Lux at second base.

Edman is on an active roster for the first time this season. He underwent right wrist surgery during the offseason and sprained his ankle during the rehab process.

The 29-year-old went 5-for-17 with one home run, four RBI and six walks over six games while on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Edman has long been a Dodgers trade target and was on the verge of being sent to the Chicago White Sox at this year’s deadline. However, general manager Brandon Gomes became key to orchestrating a three-team trade between the Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals and White Sox.
