Dodgers Roster: Gus Varland & Nick Ramirez Designated For Assignment

The Los Angeles Dodgers were plenty active on Monday and again in the final minutes before the MLB trade deadline, which required secondary roster decisions in order to make room for the new additions.

That was particularly imperative with the Dodgers trading prospects Thayron Liranzo and Trey Sweeney to the Detroit Tigers for Jack Flaherty, and sending Ryan Yarbrough to the Toronto Blue Jays for Kevin Kiermaier.

None of Liranzo, Sweeney or Yarbrough were on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster at the time of being traded. Yarbrough had been included until Monday, when he was designated for assignment in order to make room for Amed Rosario.

In order to add Flaherty and Kiermaier to the 40-man roster, the Dodgers designated Gus Varland and Nick Ramirez for assignment.

Dodgers roster decisions

Nick Ramirez

Ramirez pitched to a 6.35 ERA and 1.85 WHIP in seven appearances across five separate stints with the Dodgers this season. Ramirez has been optioned five this season, which is the maximum allowed for one year under the MLB collective bargaining agreement (CBA).

If the Dodgers had recalled Ramirez another time this year, he would have needed to remain on their active roster. The only options to remove the left-hander at that point would be if a stint on the injured list was required or to DFA Ramirez.

The Dodgers originally acquired Ramirez from the New York Yankees in exchange for cash considerations. That came days after the Yankees DFA’d Ramirez.

Gus Varland

Varland appeared in seven games for the Dodgers this season and had a 3.00 ERA. He is in his second Major League season and is a combined 1-1 with a 5.81 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 26.1 innings.

The Milwaukee Brewers selected Varland in the Rule 5 Draft but was returned to the Dodgers last year.
