The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Hunter Feduccia from Triple-A Oklahoma City and placed Freddie Freeman on the family emergency list. Feduccia was already on the 40-man roster, so no other corresponding move was needed.

Freeman left the Dodgers on Friday to return to Los Angeles despite initially being in the lineup and going through his pregame workout. One of Freenan’s three sons, Maximus, has been dealing with an illness since All-Star Week festivities in Dallas.

Chelsea Freeman, Freddie’s wife, has detailed some of the challenges the family has faced through posts on Instagram. Maximus first got sick during the All-Star break, and doctors believe he is suffering from transient synovitis.

Although Freeman remained with the team and continued to start, he and the Dodgers decided it would be best to be with his family moving forward, rather than trying to focus on baseball.

It’s unclear how long Freeman will be away from the team, but the expectation is he won’t rejoin the Dodgers until Tuesday at the earliest.

A player put on emergency leave must be inactive for least three days, but cannot miss more than seven days.

Freeman is slashing .288/.395/.493 with 16 homers and 67 RBI this season. He ranks among the top 10 in the NL in hits (109, T-9th), doubles (26, 6th), walks (61, 3rd), extra-base hits (44, 8th), runs (63, T-8th), RBI (67, T-6th), OBP (.395, 3rd), slugging (.493, 6th) and OPS (.888, 6th).

He is one double shy from becoming the 66th player in Major League Baseball history to amass 500 career two-baggers. He is in his 15th season and has notched 2,223 hits with 1,210 RBI and 1,280 runs while batting .301 in 1.989 games.

Hunter Feduccia on Dodgers roster

Adding a catcher to replace Freeman isn’t an ideal situation for a team already short on infield depth, but Feduccia was one of two just position players on the 40-man roster who is not already with the club or injured.

The other player, Diego Cartaya, also is a catcher. It wouldn’t be a suprirse if Austin Barnes ends up seeing some time at second base due to the Dodgers’ lack of infield depth.

Feduccia has been in Triple-A since the 2022 season. During that span he’s hit a combined .276/.384/.456 with 46 doubles, 23 home runs and 124 RBI over 194 games.

In 2024, Feduccia is batting .295/.420/.451 with 14 doubles, five home runs and 42 RBI.

The Dodgers selected Feduccia in the 12th round of the 2018 MLB Draft.
