The Los Angeles Dodgers are expected to be one of the most aggressive teams at the July 30 trade deadline, with an impact starting pitcher and power-hitting outfielder on their wish list.
The Dodgers have been linked to Garrett Crochet of the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers’ Tarik Skubal as they look to add another frontline starter to their rotation.
The team is also said to have interest in the White Sox’s Luis Robert Jr. and had interest in Tampa Bay Rays All-Star Randy Arozarena before he was dealt to the Seattle Mariners.
The Dodgers have a deep farm system that could help facilitate a trade for any of the aforementioned players, but their financial advantage puts them in an envious position, via ESPN’s Jeff Passan:
With a deep farm system filled with high-ceiling and high-floor prospects, the Dodgers are positioned to strike. And they’re flush with something else that can be particularly useful this time of year. “They’ve got money,” one executive said, “and most of us don’t.”
The Dodgers’ deep pockets could especially come in handy when negotiating with small-market teams like the Rays, who may be more willing to part with one of their stars if L.A. covers a significant portion of that player’s contract.
That’s a strategy the Dodgers have utilized on many occasions under Guggenheim Baseball Management, including most recently during the offseason when they acquired Tyler Glasnow and Manuel Margot from the Rays.
The Dodgers parted with two players in the deal, but also took on all of Glasnow’s salary for the 2024 season while covering most of what was owed to Margot despite eventually trading him to the Minnesota Twins. This likely lessened the Dodgers’ prospect cost.
The Dodgers have additionally absorbed bad contracts in exchange for talented prospects as a way to improve their farm system.
Brandon Gomes: Dodgers looking for ‘impact-type’ players
With Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes recently indicating that the team is looking for impact players at the deadline, it seems to be a given they will make at least one splash in the next few days.
