Dave Roberts Criticizes Bobby Miller, Dodgers After Loss To Phillies

Bobby Miller’s season-long struggles continued as the Los Angeles Dodgers fell to the Philadelphia Phillies, 10-1, in the series opener at Citizens Bank Park.

The right-hander allowed nine runs on 10 hits in just four innings pitched. It was the third time in seven starts this season that Miller gave up at least five runs.

In addition to Miller’s poor outing, the Dodgers offense was mostly silent as they mustered just one run and seven hits. Cavan Biggio provided their only scoring with a solo shot off Zach Wheeler in the fifth inning.

After the game, manager Dave Roberts did not mince his words when discussing the Dodgers’ performance, via Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic:

“Tonight was embarrassing,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after what ended as a 10-1 loss.

The Phillies entered the night with the best record in baseball, and they showed why with contributions throughout their lineup. Former Dodgers shortstop Trea Turner broke the game open with a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth that extended Philadelphia’s lead to 9-0.

Turner’s grand slam broke the game open and had an estimated distance of only 356 feet, but Roberts believed Miller overall missed his location on too many pitches:

“You face a team like that and you make unexecuted pitches, they put good swings on it every time,” Roberts said. “There was some unlucky stuff in there as well. I didn’t think that grand slam was hit too hard, but at the same time it wasn’t a great pitch.”

The nine-run difference was the Dodgers’ most lopsided loss of the season. It was the fifth time they allowed at least 10 runs in a game, dropping to 0-5 in such matchups.

L.A. is 55-37 on the year, which is still good for first place in the National League West, but they remain behind the Phillies for the best record in the league.

Gavin Stone looks to play stopper for Dodgers

Having dropped four of their last six games, the Dodgers are handing the ball to Gavin Stone in the second matchup against the Phillies.

With Tyler Glasnow and Yoshinobu Yamamoto on the 15-day injured list, the 25-year-old has become the de facto ace of the Dodgers rotation. L.A. is 12-4 in games started by Stone this season and look to get a needed win on Wednesday night.
