The Los Angeles Dodgers traded Matt Gage to the New York Mets in exchange for cash considerations. It represents a reunion as the Mets signed Gage to a Minor League contract in 2018.

The deal was completed Sunday in advance of Dodgers prospect Justin Wrobleski needing to be added to the 40-man roster for his MLB debut. Gage getting traded comes just four days after he was placed on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster. That entailed sending J.P. Feyereisen outright to Triple-A Oklahoma City upon clearing waivers.

The roster move was believed to have been prompted by Gage having an opt-out date in his Minor League contract that was approaching.

Gage began the season on the Minor League injured list and was released April 2 as a corresponding move to the Dodgers claiming Taylor Trammell off waivers from the Settle Mariners. However, the left-handed reliever quickly made his way back to the organization by signing a new Minor League contract with the Dodgers.

Gage went 1-3 with one save, a 4.29 ERA and 1.38 WHIP over 20 appearances with the Oklahoma City Baseball Club. He had a string of 7.1 consecutive scoreless innings over six appearances before allowing four runs and taking the loss against Triple-A Las Vegas on July 5.

That wound up being the 31-year-old’s final time pitching for Oklahoma City.

Gage was picked by the San Francisco Giants in the 2014 MLB Draft. He’s also spent time in the Minor Leagues with the Mets, Colorado Rockies, Arizona Diamondbacks, Toronto Blue Jays and Houston Astros.

The New York Yankees claimed him off waivers in January but traded Gage to the Dodgers the following month for Caleb Ferguson. L.A. additionally received prospect Christian Zazueta in the deal.

Gage made his MLB debut with the Blue Jays in 2022, when he appeared in 11 games. He made five appearances for the Astros last year.

Dodgers trades with Mets

The Dodgers and Mets have been somewhat frequent trade partners dating back to 2023. Last year the Dodgers traded Phil Bickford and Adam Kolarek to the Mets at the deadline, and this season acquired Yohan Ramírez.
