The 2024 NFL Draft was held this past weekend in Detroit, Mich., which saw a record six quarterbacks get selected within the first 12 picks. Among them was former LSU star Jayden Daniels, who went No. 2 to the Washington Commanders.
Daniels won the Heisman Trophy last season, which is presented annually to the most outstanding college football player. He led the Tigers to a 9-3 record and compiled a career-high 4,946 total yards with 50 touchdowns.
Daniels will now look to usher in a new era of winning football for the Commanders, who were purchased for a record $6.05 billion last year by a group that includes Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils owner Josh Harris, and Los Angeles Dodgers part-owner Magic Johnson.
In a series of posts on X, formerly Twitter, Johnson welcomed Daniels to the organization and expressed excitement for the Commanders’ 2024 NFL Draft class as a whole:
I’m so thrilled and excited to welcome Jayden Daniels to the Commanders family! I’m looking forward to all the wins we will celebrate this season and years to come with you as our leader. I know you’ll lead our franchise not only as our quarterback, but also in the locker room… https://t.co/kn0K9zPFaN

Johnson enjoyed a Hall of Fame career with the Los Angeles Lakers that included five NBA championships as a player before going on to win titles as part-owner of the Dodgers, Los Angeles Football Club and Los Angeles Sparks.
The Commanders have won three Super Bowl championships in their long history, but none since the 1991 season.
Magic Johnson grateful for Washington Commanders sale
When the NFL unanimously approved the sale of the Commanders last July, Johnson was grateful and called being part of the new ownership group the biggest accomplishment of his business career.
