The Los Angeles Dodgers hosted the Cincinnati Reds at Camelback Ranch for a Cactus League matchup, but for the second consecutive night, the rain had other plans as the game was forced to end early.
On Thursday, the Dodgers and Giants were only able to play two innings. On Friday, the Dodgers and Reds made it through the top of the fifth inning.
The other story of the game was the Dodgers’ defense with Gavin Lux and Mookie Betts switching positions. Earlier in the day, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said that would be the plan moving forward after Lux struggled with every opportunity he had in Cactus League games at shortstop.
On his first attempt at shortstop, Betts attempted to backhand a ground ball, but it deflected off his glove. On his next play, he started the turn on a double play with Lux, but it wasn’t completed.
Lux once again threw the ball in the dirt, and it was picked by Freddie Freeman, but the throw was too late regardless. He had another chance on a routine ground ball at second base with his momentum taking him to first base, and his throw was once again low in the dirt.
The 26-year-old has been unable to keep the ball in the air on his throws in Spring Training, and the one time he has, it’s been off target.
Offensively, the Dodgers did not reach base against Nick Martinez, who finished his night with a perfect four innings and six strikeouts.
Justin Wilson made the start for L.A. as their opener and struck out two in a perfect inning. However, the Reds followed in the second inning by scoring two runs against Gus Varland on three hits and a walk.
Ryan Yarbrough pitched the bulk of the innings, throwing 3.1 and allowing two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out three.
