Former Dodgers MVP Steve Garvey Advances In California Senate Election

Former Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star Steve Garvey is one of two candidates for the United States Senate heading to the general election in the state of California.

Following a crowded California nonpartisan primary on Super Tuesday, Garvey finished behind Rep. Adam Schiff (Democrat). Both are running to fill the seat that was held by Dianne Feinstein, who passed away last year.

Garvey, a registered Republican who has been vocal in his support of former president Donald Trump, ran on the promise of addressing homelessness, the southern border shared with Mexico and issues with the current economy.

Between Schiff and Garvey, the former Dodgers MVP faces an uphill battle during the general election in November. No Republican has won a Senate race in California in 35 years, with GOP voters being less than one-fourth of the state’s electorate.

Playing for the Dodgers from 1969-1982 and the San Diego Padres from 1983-1987, Garvey has his roots with many currently residing in multiple areas of California.

“I never played for Democrats, or Republicans or Independents,” Garvey said when announcing his campaign in November. “I played for all of you. Now I’m running for U.S. Senate in California, a state that I believe at one time was the heartbeat of America, and now it’s just a murmur.”

Can Steve Garvey win U.S. Senate seat in California?

In the general election, Garvey isn’t likely to win based on the political demographic in California. With 47% of California voters registered as Democrats, his name status will have to carry him a great deal.

The last Republican to win a statewide race in California was Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006 with help from his star status.

Schiff is a 12-term congressman, with a bevy of experience and funding, while Garvey batted .294 over 19 seasons with the Dodgers and Padres.
