2023 Los Angeles Dodgers Player Reviews: Bryan Hudson

Bryan Hudson was among seven players to make their MLB debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers during the 2023 season, but like Jonny DeLuca and Nick Robertson from that group, is no longer with the organization.

Whereas Robertson was included in the trade to acquire Kiké Hernández from the Boston Red Sox at the deadline last season, and DeLuca was packaged with Ryan Pepiot to the Tampa Bay Rays in the middle of December, Hudson’s career with the Dodgers just came to an end.

That process began late last month when the Dodgers designated Hudson in order to make room on their 40-man roster as part of finalizing the signing of Yoshinobu Yamamoto to a record-setting contract. One week later Hudson was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers for 2023 MLB Draft pick Justin Chambers.

Hudson first joined the Dodgers roster last June when Tayler Scott was designated for assignment. He only remained with the team for three days but got recalled during the first week of July. Hudson was optioned five days later but twice returned in August.

Over the multiple stints up with the Dodgers, Hudson had a 7.27 ERA and 1.85 WHIP across just six relief appearances. The left-hander fared much better with Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he went 5-2 with a 2.43 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 46 games (eight starts).

With Hudson getting DFA’d and ultimately traded, the Dodgers currently have just three left-handed relief pitchers on their 40-man roster in Caleb Ferguson, Ryan Yarbrough and Alex Vesia.

Hudson originally joined the Dodgers in December 2022 when he signed a Minor League contract.

Bryan Hudson 2023 highlight

Although it came in a 15-0 loss to the San Francisco Giants at Dodger Stadium, Hudson made his MLB debut on June 17. He allowed three runs over two innings and collected a pair of strikeouts.

2024 outlook

The 26-year-old now gets a change to compete for a spot in the Brewers bullpen that is in need of a lefty.
