2023 NLDS: Emmet Sheehan Wishes Dodgers Postseason Debut ‘Could’ve Gone A Little Better’

Emmet Sheehan expected to factor into the Los Angeles Dodgers’ pitching plans for Game 1 of the National League Division Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but he found himself on the mound much sooner than anticipated after Clayton Kershaw retired just one of eight batters faced.

Sheehan recorded the final two outs of the opening frame and went on to complete 3.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits with four strikeouts against two walks.

“I wish it could’ve gone a little better for me and the team, but for them to have confidence in me means everything,” Sheehan said of his Dodgers postseason debut.

Sheehan had a boost of adrenaline pitching in his first playoff game and tried to manage his emotions as best as he could. “It was really cool,” he began.

“I was trying to take it all in as much as I could and just do my job. Keep us in the game because we always have a shot with our offense. I did as much as I could to keep us in it. I feel like it could’ve gone a little bit better, but I was happy to get in there.”

After a disappointing loss in Game 1, the Dodgers will attempt to reset on their off day before returning to action on Monday. “Just got to wipe it. Clean slate,” Sheehan said.

“You look at the past, the Padres lost the first game last year and ended up beating us. Year before that, we lost the first game and ended up winning the series. Whether it be by nine or one, just got to wipe it, clean slate, and go to the next one.”

Emmet Sheehan confident in Bobby Miller

Sheehan is one of five rookies on the Dodgers NLDS roster, along with Michael Grove, Bobby Miller, James Outman and Ryan Pepiot. Miller will now look to be the stopper in Game 2 when he makes his postseason debut.

“He’s going to be great,” Sheehan said of Miller. “We have all the confidence in him. He’s a great pitcher and I’m sure he’ll rise to the occasion because that’s the type of guy he is and type of mentality he has.”
