The Los Angeles Dodgers entered the 2023 season with a lot of question marks surrounding their offense, but those concerns were silenced as their group of hitters put together a tremendous effort and made franchise history.
The Dodgers enter their final three-games of the season with the second-most runs scored in MLB at 894, trailing only the Atlanta Braves’ 927 runs. In addition, the Dodgers are first in walks (639), second in home runs (204) and RBI (865), and fifth in hits (1401) and doubles (300).
Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman have been the main drivers of the offense, as was expected from the pair of superstars, but they’ve also received bounce-back production from J.D. Martinez, Max Muncy and Jason Heyward, along with another quality season overall from Will Smith, despite his recent slump.
James Outman has been a strong contributor as well in his rookie season with 23 home runs and an .800 on-base plus slugging percentage, and Chris Taylor has picked his production up as of late as one of the team’s hottest hitters.
The Dodgers lineup helped carry them through a tough stretch from their pitching staff when they were struggling to prevent runs, and it has led to another season as the National League West division champions.
Dodgers with 100 RBI
Mookie Betts
Betts has had another tremendous season that would have won him his second MVP award, if not for Ronald Acuña Jr. of the Braves.
The 30-year-old has 106 RBI so far, which set the MLB record for the most out of the leadoff spot in one season.
It’s Betts’ third career season of at least 100 RBI, with his last coming in 2017 for the Boston Red Sox, and his most since 2016 when he had 113.
Betts has shown off his versatility by playing second base for much of the season, and he has hit .308/.410/.585 while earning his seventh All-Star selection.
Max Muncy
After a down season in 2022, Muncy has rebounded to being one of the Dodgers’ most productive sluggers once again. His 36 home runs are tied for a career high, previously set in 2021, and Muncy reached 100 RBI for the first time. He’s currently second on the team with 105 RBI.
Muncy still owns a low batting average at .213, but he’s made up for that with his ability to draw walks, giving him a .335 on-base percentage to go along with .478 slugging.
The 33-year-old has spent most of his time batting in the middle of the lineup, where he has earned the trust and praise of Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.
Freddie Freeman
Since signing with the Dodgers in 2021, Freeman has continued his reputation as one of the best pure hitters in baseball. That carried into this year with his second consecutive 100-RBI season and fourth overall.
Freeman is currently at 101 RBI, which is his third-highest mark in a season. Freeman’s career high was set in 2019 with 121 RBI, and he also had 109 in 2013.
The 34-year-old has hit his way into the record books with 58 doubles on the season so far, which is the Dodgers franchise record. He is also just two away from becoming the first player since 1936 to reach 60 doubles.
In addition, Freeman has 200 hits for the first time in his career, and he has now moved past that mark with 207 total. He has added 28 home runs and 23 stolen bases, for another historic mark, while batting .331/.410/.565.
J.D. Martinez
Martinez reached 100 RBI on Thursday with a two-run homer. He has now produced five seasons of at least 100 RBI, with his last one coming in 2019 when he had 105.
Martinez set a career-best with 130 RBI in 2018, and he also added 104 in 2017, and 102 in 2015.
After a down 2022 season that saw him hit .274/.341/.448 with just 16 home runs in 139 games, Martinez has had a resurgent 2023 with the Dodgers, blasting 32 home runs in 110 games while hitting .274/.325/.576.
