Freddie Freeman broke the Los Angeles Dodgers record for most double in one season with 50. Freeman achieved the feat with a pair of two-baggers in a 7-4 win over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday to clinch a series victory and winning road trip.
The L.A. Dodgers record previously belonged to Shawn Green, who finished with 49 doubles during the 2003 season. Freeman is on pace to hit a career-high 63 doubles this year. Freeman’s previous best was 47 doubles hit in his first season with the Dodgers.
The all-time Dodgers franchise record for most doubles in one season is 52 hit by Johnny Frederick in 1929.
Joe Medwick of the St. Louis Cardinals holds the National League record of 64 doubles, set in 1936. Medwick went on to spend parts of five seasons with Brooklyn (1940-1943, 1946).
Earl Webb set the MLB record for most doubles in a single season with 67 as a member of the 1931 Red Sox.
Freeman catapulted himself to the top of the Dodgers’ leaderboard with five doubles during the six-game road trip. He hit at least one double in four games during that stretch.
Overall in the month of August, Freeman is up to 15 doubles. He has four more games, all of which are at home, to add onto that total. Freeman has hit 23 doubles at Dodger Stadium this season.
In terms of monthly totals, August is still only Freeman’s second-best showing in terms of doubles. He hit a franchise-record 17 two-baggers in May en route to slugging 24 extra-base hits, which also was the most in Dodgers history.
Freeman was named National League Player of the Month for May.
Freddie Freeman trying to follow Mookie Betts
The Dodgers lineup is being led by Betts and Freeman forming arguably the most potent one-two punch in baseball. Both are 2023 NL MVP candidates, though Betts currently appears to be more of a frontrunner with Atlanta Braves All-Star Ronald Acuña Jr. than Freeman is.
The Dodgers nevertheless have continued to emphasize Freeman’s value, but he recently deflected credit to Betts for being a pace-setter in the leadoff spot.
