The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed Tyson Miller off waivers from the New York Mets and transferred Tony Gonsolin to the 60-day injured list in order to make room on their 40-man roster.
Gonsolin had been on the 15-day IL since August 19 due to right forearm inflammation. That came after surrendering a career-worst five home runs in a loss to the Miami Marlins.
Gonsolin disclosed he’d pitched through right elbow discomfort for more than one month, which was believed to be partly to blame for some of his struggles this season. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts explained Gonsolin continued to pitch through the lingering injury because doing so was not going to make it worse.
Dr. Neal ElAttrache recently examined Gonsolin’s balky elbow, and although Roberts didn’t yet have specifics of a diagnosis, he revealed surgery is a possibility.
Gonsolin already has been ruled out to return this season, but surgery would impact his availability for the 2024 season as well.
The 29-year-old went 8-5 with a 4.98 ERA and 1.22 WHIP across 20 starts this year.
Tyson Miller returns to Dodgers
Miller getting claimed off waivers by the Dodgers marks a return to the organization. He originally was acquired in July via trade with the Milwaukee Brewers.
He had been designated for assignment on July 8 after appearing in a career-high seven games for the Brewers this season. However, Miller pitched in just one game with the Dodgers before he was DFA’d as a corresponding move to Ryan Pepiot returning from the 60-day IL.
Miller also made only one relief appearance after the Mets claimed him off waivers. He pitched two scoreless innings against Pittsburgh Pirates on August 14 to earn a win.
New York designated Miller for assignment last week as one of two moves to add Sean Reid-Foley to their roster.
Miller presumably will report to Triple-A Oklahoma City, but if he is recalled at any point this season, he would need to remain on the Dodgers roster or be DFA’d once again due to already using the maximum five Minor League options permitted in a single year.
