Recap: Tony Gonsolin Allows 5 Home Runs; Dodgers’ Winning Streak Snapped By Marlins

Tony Gonsolin wasn’t able to build on an encouraging outing as he surrendered five home runs in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 11-3 loss to the Miami Marlins. The defeat snapped the Dodgers’ season-best winning streak at 11 games and gave them their first loss on the homestand.

Against the Colorado Rockies last week, Gonsolin’s first pitch of the game was hit for a leadoff home run. On Friday night it took two pitches for Jorge Soler to provide the Marlins with a lead.

Gonsolin went on to strand a pair of two-out walks and was quickly picked up by Mookie Betts hitting his 11th leadoff home run and overall 32nd long ball of the season.

Max Muncy and James Outman hit leadoff homers as well, but the Dodgers had already fallen into a significant deficit by the time the left-handed sluggers provided some fireworks.

Soler hit his second home run of the game in the third inning, and Jake Burger and Jacob Stallings also took Gonsolin deep before he could get through the frame, extending the Marlins’ lead to 7-1.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. broke the game open with a three-run shot in the fourth. The Dodgers faced an eight-run deficit despite having three leadoff home runs in the first five innings of the game.

The five home runs Gonsolin surrendered tied the L.A. Dodgers franchise record for most in one game, which previously belonged to Don Sutton.

The 10 runs also marked a career high and Gonsolin’s third start this season of giving up at least eight hits. Prior to this year, Gonsolin had never allowed that many hits in an outing.

Sandy Alcántara, who has fallen short of matching last year’s performance, had six strikeouts and allowed the aforementioned three solo home runs (seven hits overall) across six innings.

Dodgers pitching crunch

Further compounding Gonsolin’s poor performance was he managed to pitch just 3.1 innings the night before an unexpected split doubleheader because of Hurricane Hilary.

Gus Varland provided the Dodgers with 1.2 innings, Victor González got through two scoreless, Alex Vesia pitched the eighth and Miguel Rojas handled the ninth.

The Dodgers are expected to rely on a bullpen game in the afternoon affair, with Julio Urías taking the mound in the nightcap.
