The Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated Fernando Valenzuela during a pregame ceremony to officially retire No. 34, and then managed to pull away late for a 6-1 win over the Colorado Rockies. That extended the Dodgers’ winning streak to a season-high-tying six games.
After getting just one run upon loading the bases with nobody out in the third inning, the Dodgers took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Amed Rosario beat out a double play.
A night of wasting opportunities then turned for the Dodgers in the sixth inning as they faced former teammate Justin Bruihl.
James Outman’s walk and Chris Taylor’s single put two on with one out for David Peralta, who provided insurance with an RBI double. Peralta benefitted from home-plate umpire Laz Diaz calling a borderline pitch a ball.
Bruihl then hit Miguel Rojas with a pitch, marking the end of his night.
The Rockies turning to Jake Bird didn’t slow the Dodgers down as Mookie Betts was hit by a pitch to bring a run in. Freddie Freeman followed that with a fly ball to deep left field that Jurickson Profar inexplicably dropped, allowing another run to score.
Freeman was credited with a sacrifice fly and reaching on Profar’s error. A traditional sacrifice fly from Will Smith capped off the four-run inning for the Dodgers.
Lance Lynn & Dodgers pitching
Lance Lynn pitched five innings in what was his shortest of three starts with the Dodgers, but it also marked the first one without giving up a home run.
Lynn held the Rockies to one run — unearned — and worked his way through some traffic behind nine strikeouts.
Caleb Ferguson and Alex Vesia each pitched one scoreless inning, and Yency Almonte was on the verge of handling the eighth and ninth to finish the Dodgers’ win but was removed one out short due to an apparent right leg/knee injury.
Ryan Brasier took over for Almonte and recorded the final out in the ninth.
