The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Bryan Hudson from Triple-A Oklahoma City and optioned Gavin Stone prior to Wednesday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Stone heads to OKC one day after pitching two innings out of the bullpen. He joined the Dodgers roster on Monday as the corresponding move to Victor González getting optioned.
Although Stone is developing as a starter, the Dodgers planed to utilize him as a long reliever during the final week before the All-Star break. Stone threw 50 pitches and held the Pirates to just one run despite allowing five hits.
In four games (three starts) for the Dodgers this season, Stone has pitched to a 12.75 ERA and 3.00 WHIP. The right-hander made his MLB debut against the Philadelphia Phillies and faced the Atlanta Braves and Tampa Bay Rays in ensuing starts.
Although Stone has endured a bumpy start to his MLB career, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts believes the 24-year-old has gained valuable experience thus far.
Hudson is back up with the Dodgers for a second stint this season. He’s only appeared in one game thus far, allowing three runs over two innings against the San Francisco Giants.
While with OKC, Hudson has gone 4-0 with a 1.83 ERA and 1.17 WHIP across 29 games (two starts). Hudson last pitched for Oklahoma City on June 30.
Dodgers bullpen outlook
Hudson is the second left-handed relief pitcher in the Dodgers bullpen, joining Caleb Ferguson. He also provides L.A. with an option for some length as a multi-inning reliever.
Considering Evan Phillips pitched for a third consecutive day on Tuesday, he doesn’t figure to pitch again during the Pirates series.
