The Los Angeles Dodgers had Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and J.D. Martinez voted among the 2023 MLB All-Star Game starters on the National League.
Betts, Freeman and Martinez were among the leaders at each All-Star Game voting update. Betts regularly trailed the Atlanta Braves’ Ronald Acuña Jr., who secured a starting spot by leading all NL players in votes, but Freeman always remained ahead of Matt Olson and Martinez held the edge on Philadelphia Phillies’ Bryce Harper throughout as well.
Will Smith never managed to overtake Sean Murphy to start at catcher for the NL, and appears likely to have to rely on the Player Vote to avoid yet another All-Star Game snub.
Meanwhile, Betts has earned a seventh All-Star Game selection in his career. It’s his third appearance with the Dodgers and fourth overall start. With Betts voted into the All-Star Game, it all but cements his participation in the 2023 Home Run Derby at T-Mobile Park as well.
Freeman has become the first Dodgers first baseman to start in the MLB All-Star Game via fan voting since Steve Garvey did so from 1974-1980. Gil Hodges (1951) is the only other Dodgers first baseman to start in an All-Star Game.
Martinez is the second Dodgers player to start an All-Star Game at designated hitter. Although when Max Muncy did so in 2021, fans did not yet vote for that position on the NL team.
The Dodgers’ three position players starting in an All-Star Game is their most since having four in 1980.
Pitchers and reserves for NL and American League teams – totaling 23 for each side – will be determined through a combination of “Player Ballot” choices and selections made by the commissioner’s office.
