Fresh off their first series win of the month, the Los Angeles Dodgers now begin a weekend set against the rival San Francisco Giants in what’s only their second meeting of the season.
The Dodgers won two of three at Oracle Park from April 10-12. Going two months between the longtime rivals facing each other is largely due to the MLB balanced schedule format.
The series opener at Dodger Stadium is highlighted by Emmet Sheehan making his MLB debut. Sheehan makes the start due to Julio Urías not yet having returned to the rotation and a bullpen game not being feasible.
Although the 23-year-old is needed because of Urías’ spot in the rotation, the Dodgers optioned Michael Grove to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Sheehan joining the Dodgers brings their 40-man roster full once again. A spot was opened earlier this week when Adam Kolarek was designated for assignment.
Sheehan is 4-1 with a 1.86 ERA and 0.88 WHIP across 12 games (10 starts) for Double-A Tulsa this season. He was named Texas League Pitcher of the Month for May after going 2-0 with a 0.36 ERA in five games (four starts).
The Giants counter with John Brebbia in what’s his eighth start and 26th overall game this year. Brebbia is 2-0 with a 3.25 ERA and 1.08 WHIP, and makes a fourth consecutive appearance as an opener.
The right-hander hasn’t pitched more than two innings in any game this season and last allowed a run on May 30. Brebbia allowed a solo home run in a combined 1.2 innings during back-to-back relief appearances against the Dodgers in April.
San Francisco is on a four-game winning streak and sit 4.5 games back of the Arizona Diamondbacks for first place in the National League West. The Dodgers trail the surprising Diamondbacks by two games.
J.D. Martinez returns to the Dodgers lineup after receiving somewhat of a night off. Martinez did make a pinch-hit appearance during the Dodgers’ extra-innings win against the Chicago White Sox.
Prior to the game the Dodgers placed Max Muncy on the 10-day injured list due to a left hamstring strain and recalled Michael Busch from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
