Noah Syndergaard pitched just one inning in his last outing on May 9 against the Milwaukee Brewers due to a blister on his right index finger that appeared likely to require a stint on the 15-day injured list.
Before throwing his first pitch of the game, third base umpire Alfonso Marquez checked on Syndergaard and motioned to the dugout for the trainer. Syndergaard walked off the field to receive treatment on his finger and came back to pitch the first inning before being removed to start the second frame.
The Dodgers described the injury as a cut, but Syndergaard alternated between the use of blister and cut when describing the injury, and a SportsNet LA camera captured him showing a bloodied index finger in the dugout.
Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts said that Noah Syndergaard threw a bullpen session on Saturday to test the injury, but they needed to talk with the trainers about the next steps. After going over the options, Syndergaard is set to make his next scheduled start on Monday against the Minnesota Twins.
“[Saturday’s] ‘pen, he came out of it well,” Roberts said. “Today he put some stuff on it and got through catch play. I think right now we’re good to go.”
Syndergaard has been using Dermabond on the blister/cut, which allows him to pitch with it, and that held up during the bullpen and prior starts. Syndergaard did not use it in Milwaukee because the Dodgers thought they were past the issue, and that’s when it began to reoccur.
The Dermabond takes time to cure on his finger, so he could not apply it during his last outing once the injury began to appear.
Syndergaard is 1-3 with a 6.12 ERA, 4.77 FIP and 1.42 WHIP in 32.1 innings pitched over seven starts.
Dodgers not making contingency plan for Noah Syndergaard
Gavin Stone was scratched from his start for Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday, but Roberts said that is unrelated to the health of Syndergaard.
“I don’t know why,” Roberts said when asked why Stone was scratched. “All I know is that Noah is pitching for us Monday.”
If Syndergaard is unable to pitch or go deep into the start, the Dodgers will end up going with a bullpen game, but Roberts doesn’t think it will get to that point.
“We’ll have to adapt with the guys we have, but we have all the confidence he’ll be able to go deep into the game and pitch efficiently,” the skipper said.
