After taking two of three from the San Diego Padres, the Los Angeles Dodgers continue their road trip with the opener of a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field.
The Dodgers enter play with a 21-14 record, which is good for first place in the National League West. The Brewers, at 19-15, trail the first-place Pittsburgh Pirates by a half-game in the NL Central. Milwaukee is just 1-6 since getting off to an 18-9 start and snapped a six-game losing streak Sunday by salvaging their series against the San Francisco Giants.
Tony Gonsolin makes his third start of the season on two extra days of rest. He allowed three runs and five hits in 4.2 innings of work in his last outing against the Philadelphia Phillies on May 1.
Gonsolin’s fastball velocity is down a few ticks from his 2022 average of 93.1 mph, but he and the Dodgers aren’t concerned.
“Yeah, definitely,” answered Gonsolin when asked if he was confident in adding more velocity in future starts. “I feel like right now it’s coming out OK. Numbers are solid on it, so just a matter of time.”
Gonsolin has pitched to a 3.38 ERA, 5.85 FIP and 1.50 WHIP with four strikeouts against five walks in eight innings across two starts this season. In his career against the Brewers, he owns a 2-0 record, 0.75 ERA and 0.67 WHIP over 12 innings pitched (two games).
Milwaukee counters with Freddy Peralta, who looks to build on a solid start against the Colorado Rockies. He allowed two runs on seven hits and collected 10 strikeouts in six innings pitched.
Peralta is 3-2 with a 3.63 ERA, 3.61 FIP, 1.27 WHIP and 10.6 strikeouts per nine in 34.2 innings pitched this season (six starts). The right-hander has found success against the Dodgers in his career, going 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 10.3 strikeouts per nine across three starts.
Peralta has reverse splits but faces a Dodgers lineup that includes six left-handed hitters. Among them is Michael Busch, who gets to make a start one game after providing a go-ahead RBI single in the 10th inning.
