Steve Sax is consigned his player collection SCP Auctions for an auction of Los Angeles Dodgers World Series rings and accompanying trophies from 1981 and 1988, commemorative baseballs, autographed jerseys and more. The online auction runs through Saturday, April 29.
A portion of the proceeds benefit the Capt. John J. Sax Foundation, which was set up in his late son’s memory.
“In continuing to honor the life of a devoted flyer, the Capt. John J. Sax Foundation serves to support those who choose to further their education, exploration and passion for flight dwelling within the hearts of future aviators within the United States of America,” Sax said.
John Sax was among five United States Marines who tragically passed away last year when their Osprey crashed during training session in the California desert near San Diego.
“It is with complete devastation that I announce that my precious son, Johnny was one of the five US Marines that perished on Wednesday, June 8 in the Osprey Military crash near San Diego,” Steve Sax said in a statement at the time.
“For those of you that knew Johnny, you saw his huge smile, bright light, his love for his family, the Marines, the joy of flying airplanes and defending our country!
“He was my hero and the best man I know, there was no better person to defend our country. Johnny Sax knew he wanted to be a pilot since his young years and would tell his Dad what types of planes were flying overhead while playing little league baseball in the outfield.
“There was never any doubt from a young age that Johnny would be a pilot and his passion was to fly! I am so proud of the man he became and so proud to call him my son! This loss will change my life forever and is a loss to not only the Marines but this world!”
Sax was selected by the Dodgers in the ninth round of the 1978 MLB Draft and he spent eight seasons with the team. During that time Sax was three-time All-Star and won two World Series. Sax remains connected to the Dodgers organization, and along with Eric Karros, threw out the ceremonial first pitch before Game 1 of the 2022 National League Division Series against the San Diego Padres. Prior to that, Sax represented the Dodgers at the 2022 MLB Draft. Have you subscribed to the Dodger Blue YouTube channel?
