Recap: Dodgers Hit 3 Home Runs To Complete Sweep Of Rockies

The Los Angeles Dodgers received home runs from Will Smith, Jason Heyward and Max Muncy to back another strong performance by Julio Urías to complete a sweep of the Colorado Rockies with a 5-2 win. The Dodgers finished 4-2 on their homestand to rebound from splitting an Opening Series with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Smith continued his torrid start to the season with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. That tied a career high of three consecutive games with a home run.

Heyward also joined Smith in hitting a homer multiple nights as he lined another out to the right field pavilion. Heyward’s solo blast extended the Dodgers’ lead to 3-0 in the third inning.

Muncy’s home run in the fourth inning put L.A. up 4-0. It also was a bit of frustration release for Muncy, who was among two players in the Dodgers lineup to finish with more than one hit. He’s gotten off to a slow start at the plate and again had multiple misplays at third base.

Smith provided more insurance in the bottom of the eighth inning with an RBI double to the right-center field gap. That drove in Mookie Betts, who one inning earlier collided with Heyward in shallow right field.

Tuesday’s game was Betts’ second start at second base this season, which became necessary in the finale against the Rockies due to Miguel Vargas missing the game because of some soreness and mild inflammation in his right thumb after being hit by a pitch.

Urías strong, Dodgers bullpen gets shaky

Urías needed 53 pitches to get through three innings and he escaped a bases-loaded jam in the process. He proceeded to finish at just 87 pitches over six innings, collecting six strikeout without issuing a walk.

Urías was followed by scoreless innings each from Caleb Ferguson and Brusdar Graterol. It was a bounce-back appearance for Graterol as he struggled in the ninth inning of a loss to the Diamondbacks.

The Dodgers’ bid for a shutout was lost when Phil Bickford retired just one of four batters faced. Some of that was due to Heyward not coming up with a play in right field.

Evan Phillips worked his way into a bases-loaded situation but limited the damage to one run on a sacrifice fly before finishing out the game.
