Spring Training Recap: Dodgers Walk To Tie With Angels

The Los Angeles Dodgers finished with fewer hits than the Los Angeles Angels and settled for a 2-2 tie at Tempe Diablo Stadium in the first of five Spring Training meetings between the clubs.

Tony Gonsolin pitched through traffic over 2.1 innings in what was his 2023 debut. Much like his All-Star season last year, Gonsolin excelled when runners reached base.

He allowed three hits and issued two walks but held the Angels scoreless while throwing 41 pitches. Jake Reed stranded the runner he inherited from Gonsolin.

With Friday’s start being Gonsolin’s debut this year, he got his first experience with the new MLB pitch timer.

“I felt really fast at the beginning,” Gonsolin said after his start.

“I felt like I was looking at the clock a lot and then later in the inning and the second inning and third, I felt like every time I looked, I had plenty of time. So I tried not to think about it so I could really slow down.”

Gonsolin avoided a pitch clock violation, as did all other Dodgers pitchers. The Angels incurred one.

Gonsolin exited with the game knotted in a scoreless tie, which the Dodgers broke in the fourth inning.

They did so without a single hit, instead capitalizing on Carlos Estévez walking the bases loaded before managing to strike out J.D. Martinez. Estévez followed that with a walk of Trayce Thompson and it marked the end of his relief appearance.

Kolton Ingram struck out David Peralta but followed that by walking Jonny DeLuca to bring in the Dodgers’ second run. Ingram then got Mookie Betts swinging to end the inning.

The Angels were down to their final strike when Myles Emmerson tied the game with a two-run double down the first-base line. The Angels finished with six hits to the Dodgers’ three.

Dodgers pitching probables

Ryan Pepiot is scheduled to take the mound Saturday for his second Spring Training start, followed by Julio Urías facing the Chicago White Sox.

Urías’ outing will be his last with the Dodgers before reporting to Team Mexico for the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
