The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Walker Buehler, J.P. Feyereisen and Blake Treinen on the 60-day injured list on Thursday.
All three of the pitchers placed on the IL are expected to miss most or all of the 2023 season due to their respective injuries. The move to the IL does not affect their timeline for a return, but it did give the Dodgers 40-man roster space to make the signings of David Peralta, Jimmy Nelson and Alex Reyes official.
Buehler is likely out for all of the 2023 season after undergoing a second Tommy John Surgery in addition to a right flexor tendon repair last August. However, Buehler and the Dodgers have not ruled out a return late in the year, even if it remains unlikely. The 28-year-old pitched to a 4.02 ERA and 1.29 WHIP across 12 starts last season.
Feyereisen was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays during the offseason, but he is coming off shoulder surgery and isn’t expected to pitch again until late in 2023.
The 29-year-old posted 0.00 ERA over 24.1 innings in 22 games this past season. Feyereisen’s breakout was fueled by cutting his walk rate from 13.5% and 14.1% in his first two seasons to 5.8% last year while also increasing his strikeout rate to 29.1% from 22.6%.
Treinen underwent shoulder surgery in November to repair his labrum and rotator cuff, which will force him to miss most of the 2023 season as well. Treinen is optimistic he will return to the mound during the season, but it’s not guaranteed he will be able to.
The 34-year-old was limited to just five innings in 2022, posting a 1.80 ERA and 0.40 WHIP.
Dodgers among teams interested in Zack Britton
Former All-Star closer Zack Britton has twice thrown in front of teams this offseason as he searches for a new club. His latest session reportedly was attended by the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Angels, New York Mets, San Francisco Giants, Texas Rangers and Dodgers.
The Dodgers are viewed as a potential landing spot for Britton as they have been looking to upgrade their bullpen this month.
Britton only appeared in three games due to injuries during the 2022 season with the New York Yankees and managed to record just two outs while facing nine batters and walking six of them. He last threw more than 20 innings in 2019, when he held a 1.91 ERA across 61.1 innings.
