The 2023 Detroit Tigers coaching staff under manager A.J. Hinch was finalized, with the group including former Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Tim Federowicz.

Hinch’s staff also includes bench coach George Lombard, pitching coach Chris Fetter, assistant pitching coach Juan Nieves, assistant pitching coach Robin Lund, hitting coach Michael Brdar, hitting coach Keith Beauregard, assistant hitting coach James Rowson, first base coach Alfredo Amézaga and third base coach Gary Jones.

Federowicz, fittingly, was hired by the Tigers as a catching coach. He joins Lombard as those on the Tigers staff and with prior ties to the Dodgers.

Federowicz was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the seventh round of the 2008 MLB Draft. He was traded to the Dodgers three years later as part of a three-team deal that also included the Seattle Mariners.

Over parts of four seasons with the Dodgers, Federowicz hit .194/.241/.328 with 19 doubles, 12 home runs and 39 RBI in 271 plate appearances across 89 games. Federowicz’s first stint with the Dodgers organization came to an end in December 2014 when he was traded to the San Diego Padres as part of the blockbuster that involved Matt Kemp and Yasmani Grandal.

Federowicz went on spend time with the Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Houston Astros, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers before returning to the Dodgers in 2020 on a Minor League contract. Federowicz’s time with the Astros coincided when Hinch was still their manager.

Federowicz appeared in 25 games with Triple-A Oklahoma City before leaving the team to join USA Baseball’s roster for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The eight-year veteran retired in December 2021 and immediately transitioned into coaching as manager of the Mariners’ Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers. Federowicz took over for former Dodgers utilityman Kristopher Negrón, who had earned a promotion to become the Mariners’ new first base coach.
