The Los Angeles Dodgers entered the offseason expecting their coaching staff to remain intact for the 2023 season, but those plans seem to be changing.

On Sunday morning it was reported by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic that the Miami Marlins were targeting Dodgers co-hitting coach Brant Brown for their open hitting coach position. The Marlins put in a request to interview Brown and it appears they were quickly impressed with him.

By Sunday afternoon, the Marlins reportedly decided to make Brown their new hitting coach, according to Craig Mish of MLB Network:

Brant Brown is the new Marlins hitting coach per sources. @Ken_Rosenthal first noted earlier today Marlins were targeting him for the position.

Brown spent three seasons as a hitting coach for the Dodgers and five overall with the club after serving as the hitting strategist in 2018 and 2019. He was originally hired by the Dodgers in 2017.

The 2020 World Series champion also served on the National League All-Star coaching staff in 2018, 2019 and 2021.

Brown worked with Cody Bellinger and Kiké Herandez, among other Major League players, while the season was delayed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and during the 2018 season he helped Chris Taylor adjust his swing mechanics.

Before joining L.A., Brown spent five seasons as a coach in the Seattle Mariners organization, including 2016-17 as the team’s offensive coordinator, and from 2013-15, he served as Seattle’s minor league outfield coordinator. Prior to joining the Mariners, Brown spent six seasons as a hitting coach in the Texas Rangers organization (2007-12).

Brown played 424 Major League games with the Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates and Marlins from 1996-2000, hitting .247/.301/.445 with 45 home runs. He was originally selected by the Cubs in the third round of the 1992 First-Year Player Draft.

How will Dodgers replace Brant Brown?

Brown shared the hitting coach duties with Robert Van Scoyoc, who is still with the organization. The likely outcome is assistant hitting coach Aaron Bates will be promoted to fill Brown’s role and they will either hire or promote a new coach to fill Bates’ role.
