The Los Angeles Dodgers postseason roster for the National League Division Series against the San Diego Padres is comprised of the planned 13 pitchers and 13 position players, with Dustin May, Blake Treinen and Miguel Vargas among the inclusions.
Hanser Alberto, Caleb Ferguson and Craig Kimbrel are notable omissions from the Dodgers NLDS roster.
May and Treinen each finished the regular season on the 15-day injured list, with the latter having been out since September 10 because of right shoulder tightness. May was put on the 15-day IL on Sept. 24 due to lower back tightness.
Both pitchers were shut down from throwing for brief stretches, but managed to face batters this past weekend during intrasquad games at Dodger Stadium.
“They’re both going to be healthy enough to make it,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “We still have to sort of finalize the last couple bullpen spots, but these are good problems to have because we have a lot of viable options.”
May appeared to be the more likely to get included on the NLDS roster despite only being built up to throw four innings. The question marks with Treinen centered around his ability to bounce back after throwing.
Meanwhile, Kimbrel had some success after being removed from his closer role. He tossed 5.2 scoreless innings and held opponents to a .067/.300/.067 batting line over six appearances after being taken out of the closer role.
Although Kimbrel allowed just one hit during that span, he did walk five batters and took the loss when one of those brought in the game-winning run in extra innings against the Padres.
Joey Gallo getting named to the playoff roster during the final week of the regular season answered one of the questions, and the other was whether the Dodgers would opt to give Alberto or Vargas the nod for the final bench spot.
Chris Taylor also recovered from neck trouble to be included, which wasn’t a surprise as he appeared to be a safe bet over recent days.
Julio Urías is starting Game 1 of the NLDS, and Clayton Kershaw is taking the ball in Game 2. The Dodgers rotation for the NLDS has not been set beyond the two left-handers.
