Tony Gonsolin fell short of the targeted three innings and the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup failed to generate much offense in a 2-1 loss to the Colorado Rockies.
Gonsolin retired the side in order in the first inning and looked sharp in his return from a right forearm strain, but then ran into trouble.
Two batters after a leadoff single, Sean Bouchard doubled to put a pair of runners in scoring position with one out. Alan Trejo then followed that with an RBI single to give the Rockies an early lead.
To Gonsolin’s credit, that was the only run allowed as he struck out the next two batters faced. He continued throwing in the Dodgers’ bullpen when Yency Almonte took over in the third inning.
Almonte, Tommy Kahnle, Craig Kimbrel, Caleb Ferguson, Chris Martin, Alex Vesia and Evan Phillips combined to throw six scoreless innings. Only Ferguson fell short of completing a full inning, as Martin inherited two runners in the sixth that he stranded by striking out Randal Grichuk on three pitches.
The string of zeroes from the Dodgers bullpen ended in the ninth when Brusdar Graterol allowed a two-out RBI single to Michael Toglia. Prior to his game-winning hit, Toglia was 0-for-3 with three strikeouts.
The hit with a runner in scoring position also was a rarity for the Rockies as a whole. They were mired in a 1-for-32 skid in such situations until going 3-for-7 on Sunday. Colorado then was 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position on Monday night before Toglia’s hit.
Dodgers lineup goes quietly
José Ureña allowed five hits but held the Dodgers to just one run over six innings. That came on a Trayce Thompson game-tying homer in the third, and he later singled to reach base safely for a ninth time in 10 plate appearances.
Trea Turner led off the bottom of the ninth with a single for the Dodgers’ first hit since the fifth inning, but they failed to rally.
