Although Julio Urías is not considered to be the 2022 National League Cy Young favorite, he continued to make a strong case to win the award with another dominant outing against the Miami Marlins on Sunday that helped lead to a Los Angeles Dodgers win.
The left-hander pitched six innings and gave up just one run on one hit to lower his season ERA to 2.32 over 139.2 innings. Additionally, Urías has made eight consecutive starts of allowing two earned runs or less, including going the entire month of August without allowing more than one run in any of his five outings.
While Urías turned in another quality start in the Dodgers’ 8-1 victory, he did walk four batters in the outing, which left him upset and looking to correct the issue, via Juan Toribio of MLB.com:
“What I really dislike the most is to walk people, and I gave up a lot of walks today,” Urías said in Spanish. “But I just have to go back and look at the tape to see what adjustments I can make.”
The four free passes are the most Urías has issued in any start this season. He previously had three outings of three walks this year, with the last one dating back to June 5. Prior to facing the Marlins at loanDepot Park, Urías had walked just three batters total in August, and 13 across 13 games since June 12.
Entering the day, his 1.82 walks per nine ranked 11th in MLB among qualified starters, but it has since risen to two per nine, which dropped Urías to 16th and behind teammate Tyler Anderson.
Urías has been working to make adjustments despite his overall stellar season, and it seems like that will continue following his start on Sunday.
Sandy Alcántara made history against Dodgers
Marlins ace Sandy Alcántara held the Dodgers to just one run in a complete game with 10 strikeouts during their 2-1 win at loanDepot Park on Saturday.
The start put the Cy Young frontrunner in the MLB record books as he became the first pitcher to ever throw a complete game with 10 strikeouts against a team at least 50 games over .500 and with a lineup that includes three MVP winners.
