Dustin May pitched an immaculate inning during what was expected to be his final rehab start with Triple-A Oklahoma City.
May accomplished the feat in the second inning, with all three of his strikeouts coming looking. He finished with 10 strikeouts over five innings and allowed just one run in Oklahoma City’s 20-3 win over the Round Rock Express (Texas Rangers affiliate).
May marked the second time an Oklahoma City Dodgers pitcher achieved the rare accomplishment, as Caleb Ferguson threw an immaculate inning on May 27.
The last Dodgers pitcher to throw an immaculate inning at the Major League level was Max Scherzer in 2021.
May’s rehab assignment began July 16 in a start for the Arizona Complex League Dodgers. He then joined Oklahoma City for five more outings and pitched five innings in each of his last two starts. May additionally did some throwing in the bullpen after exiting on Sunday.
He was followed by Brusdar Graterol, who pitched a scoreless sixth inning and collected one strikeout in his second rehab appearance. Graterol is expected to be activated off the 15-day injured list in the near future.
Blake Treinen is also on rehab assignment with the Dodgers’ top affiliate, but he isn’t expected to return until the beginning of September.
When will Dustin May join Dodgers?
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts pointed to this weekend’s series as the target return for May. His agent then announced in a now-deleted tweet that would come on Saturday.
While May was still early into his rehab starts, Roberts raved about his progress and growth from last season.
“When you guys see him, he’s a lot more physical than the last time you guys put eyes on him if you haven’t seen him recently,” he said last month. “A lot more physical.
“Everything that I hear has been good and when I have seen him in Arizona when he’s gone out there and thrown ‘pens, the body looks great, the stroke, the delivery, the command has been fantastic. He’s really commanding the baseball as good as I’ve seen him.”
