Trea Turner was named the Los Angeles Dodgers’ winner of the 2022 Heart and Hustle Award, which is presented annually by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association (MLBPAA) to one player on each team who “best embodies the values, spirits and traditions of baseball,” along with factoring in on-field performance.

Turner was also selected as the Washington Nationals recipient for the award in 2021, while Chris Taylor was given the honor for the Dodgers.

Recent Dodgers winners include Max Muncy (2019), Matt Kemp (2018), Justin Turner (2017), Chase Utley (2016) and Joc Pederson (2015).

Turner has been having another All-Star season in his first full year in L.A. while starting in every one of the Dodgers’ 105 games. The 29-year-old is second in MLB with 129 hits — trailing only his teammate Freddie Freeman, who has 132 — while entering play Thursday afternoon batting .306/.347/.500 with 17 home runs, 62 runs scored, 76 RBI, 18 stolen bases and a 137 wRC+.

The Heart and Hustle Award began in 2005 and it’s the only award in MLB that is voted on by former players, which is conducted prior to the All-Star break.

The MLBPAA formed 30 committees, comprised of Alumni players with established relationships to each team. One player from each Major League team is chosen by the committees based on their passion, desire and work ethic demonstrated both on and off the field.

As the season draws to a close, all alumni and active players will vote to select the final winner from the 30 team winners. The overall winner will be announced in mid-November on MLB Network.

Prior overall winners are David Eckstein (2005), Craig Biggio (2006, 2007), Grady Sizemore (2008), Albert Pujols (2009), Roy Halladay (2010), Torii Hunter (2011), Mike Trout (2012), Dustin Pedroia (2013), Josh Harrison (2014), Anthony Rizzo (2015), Todd Frazier (2016), Brett Gardner (2017), Mookie Betts (2018), Howie Kendrick (2019) and Ozzie Albies (2021).

A Heart and Hustle Award was not presented in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. No Dodgers player has ever been named the overall winner.
