The Los Angeles Dodgers received home runs from Mookie Betts, Trea Turner and Freddie Freeman en route to defeating the San Francisco Giants, 4-2, to guarantee a series victory at Dodger Stadium and extend their winning streak to seven games. L.A. also won their season-best 10th game in a row at home.
Like in the first two games out of the All-Star break, the Dodgers once again relied on home runs and two-out scoring. All 17 of their runs through the first three games of the series have come with two outs.
Betts twice nearly hit a homer off Alex Wood in the first inning before settling for a leadoff single. Betts wound up getting his home run in the third inning, which ended a string of five consecutive strikeouts for Wood.
That also gave Betts 200 career home runs, with 22 coming this season.
Trea Turner followed with a solo homer as well, extending his hitting streak to 10 games. Turner now has five different stretches of hitting safely in at least 10 games since being traded to the Dodgers last season.
Betts and Turner combined to give the Dodgers their fifth set of back-to-back home runs this season.
Those were the only runs Wood allowed, and he collected six strikeouts, but only pitched four-plus innings.
The Dodgers’ lead remained 2-0 until Cody Bellinger sparked a two-out rally with a base hit in the sixth inning. Gavin Lux followed that by scoring Bellinger on a line drive to the right field corner for his fifth triple of the season.
Freddie Freeman clubbed the team’s third home run of the game, extending the Dodgers’ lead to 4-0 in the seventh inning.
Saturday marked the first time Betts, Turner and Freeman have each hit a home run in the same game.
Urías adds to strong Dodgers pitching
After allowing a double to open the game, Julio Urías retired eight batters in a row. Nothing came of a two-out base hit and Urías wound up completing six scoreless innings.
Austin Slater went 2-for-2 with a single, double and walk against Urías, but the rest of the Giants lineup was 0-for-16.
Since the All-Star break, Dodgers starting pitchers have combined to throw 17 innings without allowing an earned run.
Reyes Moronta was on the doorstep of completing the shutout but issued back-to-back walks with two outs in the ninth inning. David Price then allowed both inherited runners to score before wrapping up the win.
