Recap: Justin Turner Powers Dodgers To Win Over Padres

Justin Turner hit two home runs to supply the entire Los Angeles Dodgers offense in a 3-1 win over the San Diego Padres that extended their lead in the National League West standings to 2.5 games.

Joe Musgrove largely had his way with the Dodgers lineup but squandered an early lead when Turner hit a game-tying solo home run in the second inning. Musgrove was efficient throughout his start though wound up taking the loss after giving up a two-run home run to Turner in the seventh inning.

The multi-homer game was Turner’s first since Sept. 7, 2021, and 13th of his career.

As the Dodgers struggled to generate offense, Mitch White did his part to keep the game close as he held the Padres to just one run over 4.2 innings. White was aided by Chris Taylor’s outfield assist amounting to an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded in the second.

Taylor’s 96.3 mph throw was the second time he nailed Trent Grisham at the plate since 2020. The first instance gave the Dodgers a win at Petco Park and received MLB Play of the Week honors.

White also was aided by Justin Bruihl striking out Jake Cronenworth to end the fifth inning after inheriting the go-ahead run at third base.

Bruihl, Evan Phillips, Alex Vesia and Craig Kimbrel combined for 4.1 scoreless innings.

Of note, Trea Turner went hitless on his bobblehead night at Dodger Stadium, and Freddie Freeman had a season-best 13-game hitting streak snapped.

Dodgers without David Price

Prior to the series opener the Dodgers placed David Price on the family emergency list and recalled Bruihl from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

“I don’t want to get into details. As we understand it, everyone was OK. It’s just something that he felt that he needed to be with his family,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts explained.

“Obviously, Major League Baseball granted that. We’re going to certainly miss him for three days. David will be back after three days, so he’ll be back on Sunday.”
