Two of the most notable franchises in sports are set to square off on the biggest stage beginning Tuesday night as the Los Angeles Dodgers take on the Boston Red Sox in the 2018 World Series.

The two teams have combined for 14 World Series championships and 37 pennants, but before this year, they had only met in the Fall Classic once, and that was all the way back in 1916.

The Dodgers weren’t even in Los Angeles at the time and they actually had a different name as they were known as the Brooklyn Robins. Led by Babe Ruth on the mound, the Red Sox were able to defeat the Robins in five games in that series to win their second straight championship and third in five years.

All of the games were close and competitive, but none better than Game 2 when the Red Sox outlasted the Robins, 2-1, in 14 innings.

Ruth knocked in the first run for the Red Sox, but his main impact came on the mound, where he pitched all 14 innings. He gave up just six hits and a run while striking out four and walking three. Boston won it on a pinch-hit single by Del Gainer in the bottom of the 14th.

The only win that Brooklyn managed was in Game 3 at Ebbets Field, but the Red Sox then went on to clinch the series in Game 5 back at Braves Field.

For the Dodgers, they didn’t end up winning their first World Series until 1955 and for the Red Sox, they won one more after 1916 in 1918 and then went on an 86-year drought until winning it in 2004.

Current Dodgers manager Dave Roberts played an essential part in that 2004 championship with his historic stolen base in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series.
