Tony Gonsolin was nothing short of impressive in his 2022 Spring Training debut and Freddie Freeman continued making an impact for the Los Angeles Dodgers in their 6-6 tie with the Colorado Rockies.
Gonsolin put his best foot forward in the case to make the Dodgers’ Opening Day rotation by throwing three perfect innings at Salt River Fields. He struck out two batters in both the first and second innings, then only needed five pitches to get through the third.
Gonsolin was staked an early lead thanks to Trea Turner leading off with a bloop double and Freeman following that by lining the first pitch he saw from Zach Neal into left field for an RBI base hit.
After Hanser Alberto singled and advanced to second base in his first at-bat since signing the Dodgers, Edwin Rios extended the lead to 2-0 with a fly ball to shallow left field that fell between three Rockies players for an RBI double.
AJ Pollock provided insurance with a home run in the third inning. The solo blast represented Pollock’s first hit of Spring Training.
Rios and Eddy Alvarez then combined for back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning to break the game open.
While that helped create some breathing room for Tyler Anderson, the southpaw was largely dominant over his three innings of work. Anderson did allow a two-out RBI double in the fourth inning but otherwise collected seven strikeouts.
The Rockies scored two runs off Alex Vesia after he inherited a baserunner from Caleb Ferguson in the seventh inning, and D.J. Petersen and Ezequiel Tovar combined for back-to-back home runs with two outs in the ninth to tie the game.
Urias next for Dodgers
Julio Urias is the Dodgers’ probable for Friday’s matchup against the San Diego Padres. The outing will be Urias’ first of the spring and be a change of pace for the Dodgers with a 6:05 p.m. start time rather than beginning midday.
