The Los Angeles Dodgers have one of the most dynamic bullpens in all of baseball and features pitchers with electric stuff, including Blake Treinen. However, the Dodgers did not have a representative included by The Shredder on MLB top-10 relief pitchers the 2022 season.
The Shredder is a statistical model that places emphasis on FIP, strikeout rate, and Statcast metrics to compile annual rankings. The model focuses directly on a two-year sample for relief pitchers in particular, with 2021 performance given more weight in the calculations.
Treinen and former Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen were included among the “just missed” group to be listed in the top 10. Despite missing The Shredder’s list, Mike Petriello ranked Treinen as the fourth-best reliever in the sport, while Sarah Langs ranked him third.
The Milwaukee Brewers’ Josh Hader claimed the top spot in The Shredder’s 2022 rankings for relief pitchers. Chicago White Sox closer Liam Hendriks claimed the second spot followed by Devin Williams (Brewers), Emmanuel Clase (Cleveland Guardians), Ryan Pressly (Houston Astros), Collin McHugh (Tampa Bay Rays), Raisel Iglesias (L.A. Angels), Craig Kimbrel (Chicago White Sox), Jordan Romano (Toronto Blue Jays), and Jonathan Loaisiga (New York Yankees).
Treinen could easily be featured on the 2023 edition of The Shredder’s top-10 list if he continues his stretch of excellent performance. The 33-year-old figures to enter the season as the closer for the Dodgers, which will put him into a bevy of high-leverage situations.
After posting one of the greatest seasons any reliever has had in MLB history back in 2019, Treinen had two relative ‘down’ years. In the shortened 2020 season, Treinen tossed 25.2 innings for the Dodgers, posting a 3.86 ERA and 3.20 FIP.
Treinen picked up his performance in a full 2021 season, throwing 72.1 innings with a 1.99 ERA. He also struck out an impressive 85 batters and was used primarily as a high-leverage reliever ahead of Jansen.
