2021 Los Angeles Dodgers Player Reviews: Scott Alexander

The Los Angeles Dodgers dealt with a plethora of injuries during the 2021 season, and Scott Alexander was among those to miss a significant amount of time.

The left-hander earned the final spot in the club’s Opening Day bullpen over Dennis Santana and was effective early on as he allowed only three runs over his first 13 appearances.

Alexander’s momentum came to a halt during the first week of May when he was placed on the 10-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation. While the Dodgers initially hoped he would make a speedy recovery, the 32-year-old did not return to the mound until early July.

Alexander pitched in five more games before he was placed on the IL for a second time due to left shoulder trouble. He was eventually transferred to the 60-day IL on Sept. 7, which effectively ended his season.

In 18 games this year, Alexander went 0-2 with a 2.93 ERA, 4.80 FIP and 1.24 WHIP over 15.1 innings pitched.

Alexander’s 2021 highlight

From April 30-July 19, Alexander tossed scoreless outings in six of his seven appearances. He posted a 3.35 ERA and collected five strikeouts against four walks during the span.

2022 outlook

The Dodgers outrighted Alexander, along with Andy Burns and Jimmie Sherfy, off their 40-man roster after each cleared waivers in early November.

Alexander held the right to refuse the Minor League assignment by virtue of having more than five years of Major League service time, and did so by electing free agency.

Alexander can now sign a Minor League contract at any time, but if he is looking for a Major League deal, he will have to wait until the lockout ends.
