Of the notable Los Angeles Dodgers free agents this offseason, Corey Seager figures to sign the longest and most lucrative contract.
At just 27 years old, Seager is part of a star-studded group of shortstops who have reached free agency. He’s considered a co-headliner with Carlos Correa, and the two are widely believed to be a level above Trevor Story, Javier Baez and Marcus Semien.
The Dodgers have interest in re-signing Seager and he expressed a desire to remain with the organization. But a robust market should develop, and it could lead to L.A. making financial decisions with the luxury tax — and Trea Turner — in mind.
That includes the New York Yankees, who have held negotiations with Seager’s representatives, according to Jim Bowden of The Athletic:

The Yankees have long been mentioned as potential landing spot for Seager once he reached free agency. Derek Jeter was his idol, the Yankees historically are aggressive spenders and they are coming off another season in which they fell short of expectations.
Meanwhile, Seager did endure another injury this year as he suffered a right hand fracture as a result of being hit by a pitch. The time off likely cost the 2020 World Series MVP an opportunity at winning the regular season award.
Seager nevertheless hit .306/.394/.521 with 22 doubles, 16 home runs and 57 RBI over 95 games.
Seager to decline qualifying offer
If the Yankees are to sign Seager, they would be required to forfeit a pick and the Dodgers would receive compensation in the 2022 MLB Draft.
A decision has not yet been made official, but Seager is expected to reject the $18.4 million qualifying offer he was extended. Players have until Wednesday, Nov. 17, to formally accept or decline the one-year pact.
