Dodgers Free Agent Rumors: Corey Seager Was Offered Contract Extension

The Los Angeles Dodgers will see 11 players reach free agency after the World Series concludes next week, and among the group is Corey Seager, who headlines a historic shortstop class that includes Carlos Correa, Javier Baez and Trevor Story, among others.

Seager, 28 next April, already has an impressive track record that includes two All-Star Game appearances, and 2020 National League Championship Series and World Series MVP honors.

Some believe Seager could sign a contract that exceeds $300 million, and with several teams expected to pursue him this offseason, it’s unclear if the Dodgers would want to engage in a bidding war.

L.A. will explore every avenue in retaining Seager, however, and reportedly offered him a contract extension at some point during the 2021 season, via Jorge Castillo of the L.A. Times:

The Dodgers offered Seager a contract extension earlier this year, according to people with knowledge of the situation.

The Dodgers are also believed to have considered a contract extension for Chris Taylor, but it’s unclear if an offer was ever made. The 31-year-old utility man figures to have a strong market himself due to his above-average bat and ability to play all over the field.

If the Dodgers fail to re-sign Seager or Taylor, they could fill the void at shortstop by sliding Trea Turner to his preferred position.

Seager has hit .297/.367/.504 with 164 doubles, 104 home runs and 364 RBI over parts of seven seasons with the Dodgers. He tied Justin Turner for the franchise record with 13 career postseason home runs.

Seager open to re-signing

While it remains to be seen how free agency plays out, Seager previously expressed a desire to stay with the only organization he’s known. “Absolutely,” he answered when asked if there was interest in re-signing with the Dodgers.

“I grew up here, I’ve spent a lot of time here, I believe in what these guys do, I believe in how we go about it. Absolutely.”
