With the Los Angeles Dodgers entering into the final month of the regular season with a crucial series against the San Francisco Giants, they remain without Trevor Bauer and when that might change remains unclear.
Bauer last pitched on June 28, which was the night before a San Diego woman obtained an ex parte restraining order due to allegations of sexual assault. Pasadena Police launched their criminal investigation July 1, and MLB placed Bauer on leave the following day.
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred was able to do so unilaterally, but extending it and keeping Bauer on the restricted list has required approval from the Players Association.
According to Steve Henson of the L.A. Times, the league and MLBPA have agreed to extend Bauer’s leave for an eighth time:
Trevor Bauer’s paid administrative leave from the Dodgers was extended Friday through Sept. 10, according to a league official.
Bauer has continued to be paid while on the restricted list and under investigation. The Pasadena Police Department recently concluded its probe and turned their findings over to the L.A. County District Attorney’s office, who will decided whether or not to file charges.
That came shortly after the temporary restraining order was dismissed by L.A. Superior Court judge Dianna Gould-Saltman, who ruled Bauer no longer posed a threat to the woman and that her injuries were not the result of anything she verbally objected to.
Bauer still faces the possibility of criminal charges and remains the subject of an investigation by MLB. Regardless of whether or not Bauer is charged of a crime, Manfred would still have the authority to suspend him under the league’s joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy.
Will Bauer be suspended?
For the near term, signs continue to point toward Bauer not returning this season. As for a potential suspension, some within MLB anticipate that being one year and potentially two. Though, the right-hander almost assuredly would appeal any such decision.
Bauer signed a record-setting three-year, $102 million contract this past February. The deal includes a $32 million player option for the 2022 season, and an option at the same salary for 2023 as well.
