Julio Urias turned in a strong start and the Los Angeles Dodgers slugged four home runs to get back on track with a 5-3 win over the Atlanta Braves. The Dodgers snapped the Braves’ franchise-record 13-game road winning streak.
The Dodgers’ power display began with a solo shot from Max Muncy in the first inning. Will Smith then homered in the second inning, and Mookie Betts and Corey Seager followed suit in the third.
Betts’ blast was all the more memorable in that it came on his bobblehead night at Dodger Stadium. Prior to the game Betts caught the first pitch from his mother.
The Dodgers cooled off after knocking around Drew Smyly to take a 5-0 lead, but Urias did his part to keep the Braves in check. Urias retired the first 12 batters faced, which included AJ Pollock laying out for a catch, Justin Turner’s dazzling diving stop at third base and Max Muncy making an over-the-shoulder grab.
Turner came up with another stop but Muncy couldn’t dig out the throw and Austin Riley reached on an infield single to lead off the fifth inning. The thought of what could have been was erased when Adam Duvall hit a two-out single.
Urias retired the next batter faced to strand both runners, but he surrendered back-to-back home runs in a shaky sixth inning. It marked his first time logging that many innings since July 21.
The Braves connected on their third solo home run of the game when Duvall hit one off Phil Bickford in the seventh inning.
Corey Knebel started the eighth before the Dodgers turned to Blake Treinen for a four-out save. Atlanta threatened with a small rally in the ninth with back-to-back one-out singles before Treinen could finish the game.
Dodgers gain on Giants
After squandering two opportunities over the weekend when the San Francisco Giants lost to the Braves, the Dodgers picked up a full game in the National League West standings on Monday. L.A. now is 1.5 games back of first place and will get a final look at the Giants during the regular season this weekend.
