One day after the first four-strikeout game of his career, Justin Turner clubbed a two-run home run in the eighth inning that put the Los Angeles Dodgers over the top in their 4-3 win to even the National League Championship Series with the Milwaukee Brewers.
After being shut down by Wade Miley, the Dodgers began their comeback against the vaunted Brewers bullpen for a second game in a row. Their best look against Wade Miley came in the first inning when Turner singled and David Freese hit a drive to right-center field, only to be robbed of a home run by Lorenzo Cain.
Turner’s single was one of just two hits Miley allowed through 5.2 shutout innings. He retired 16 batters in a row before allowing a single to Chris Taylor, which led to Corbin Burnes taking over.
Not only did Miley keep the Dodgers at bay, he improved to 2-for-2 with a single and double in the fifth inning. At that point he singlehandedly outhit the Dodgers.
Hyun-Jin Ryu was matching Miley pitch for pitch until Orlando Arcia broke up the scoreless tie with a solo home run to center field that was out of Cody Bellinger’s reach on his leaping attempt.
Lorenzo Cain followed Miley’s single with a double, knocking Ryu out of the game with one out in the fifth. Ryan Madson intentionally walked Christian Yelich to load the bases but a run scored on Ryan Braun’s soft groundout. To Madson’s credit, he limited the damage to just one run.
That was key as the Dodgers rallied in the seventh inning behind Max Muncy’s leadoff walk and singles from Machado and Bellinger, with the latter driving in a run. Bellinger’s RBI single snapped an 0-for-17 skid int he postseason.
Joc Pederson’s bloop single then loaded the bases but Jeremy Jeffress picked up a big first out by getting Yasiel Puig to chase a pitch out of the zone. Austin Barnes worked a walk to bring in a second run, only for the threat to come to an end when Yasmani Grandal hit into an inning-ending double play.
On top of the frustration that came with Grandal continuing to scuttle was that a solo home run Alex Wood surrendered to Travis Shaw in the sixth inning was proving to be the difference.
Kenley Jansen struck out Cain and retired Yelich after issuing a walk to covert his second save of the postseason.
With the Dodgers completing the comeback win, the NLCS now shifts to Dodger Stadium for Games 3, 4 and 5.
